How to be Intentional, Right Now

living Jul 04, 2020

We are all living in a strange world, experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime world-changing pandemic. There is so much going on around us, it can be easy to get caught up in the fear and panic and want to just curl up under the covers and close our eyes until it is over. Unfortunately, we can’t. We must figure out how to live, work, caretake, and connect in this new “normal”.

I recently read a great quote that stopped me in my tracks and made me reevaluate how I have been thinking:

“We don’t choose when we live, we choose how we live.”

– Ryan Holiday

Since the stay-at-home orders have taken effect and social distancing has become paramount to stopping the spread of COVID-19, we have all experienced more time on our hands than we know what to do with… at least more than I initially knew what to do with. The thing is, when will we ever have this opportunity again? To stay at home and focus on what is important to us, to our families, to our communities. How do we make the most of this unimaginable time we find ourselves in right now?

We are all different and find ourselves each in our circumstances. You may be able to work from home, you may not. You may have screaming kids running around the house that needs constant supervision and attention, you may not. Regardless of your situation, we can all ask ourselves the same questions to help us determine where we want to spend our time and energy, where we want to be intentional.

Here is a list of journal prompts to use to reflect on and write about, to help guide you towards creating your intentional life, right now:
  • What would I love to do right now, since I have more time?
  • What should I do right now, since I have more time?
  • Where are the opportunities?
  • What action will I take that will improve my situation?
  • What lessons am I learning right now?
  • What good things are going to come out of this?

It may not feel like it, but we all have a choice to make for ourselves. How will we live? At the end of all of this, will we be saying to ourselves, “I wish I would have…” or “I’m so glad I…”? I don’t know about you, but I want to be in the latter category.
